Dr Luke's Weekly Update - 12 September 2020

With the introduction of new Covid-19 restrictions and votes to prepare the United Kingdom for the end of the Brexit transition period it has been a busy week in Westminster.

Next week I shall be presenting my 10 minute rule bill calling for advisory labels on commercial images which have been digitally enhanced in order to protect the mental health of young people for distorted and unrealistic body images. I’m delighted that the media, young people and mental health charities and ministers have taken so much of an interest in the bill and very much hope that it will progress to the next parliamentary stage.

This week I have:

  • Been interviewed by BBC Radio Leicester and BBC Radio Kent about my body image bill.
  • Took part in the Health and Social Care Select Committee where I was able to ask the Health Secretary about plans for rehabilitation after Covid patients have been in intensive care.
  • Asked the Foreign Office minister about climate change and illegal deforestation: https://www.drlukeevans.org.uk/news/climate-change-and-illegal-deforestation
  • Met with the Chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.
  • And had a ministerial briefing about the Government’s Kickstart scheme to get young people in work.
  • Met with my fellow Leicestershire MPs to talk about the Government’s planning white paper.
  • And the veteran’s minister to discuss the case of a constituent.
  • Sat on the delegated legislation committee for the Intellectual Property (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020.
  • Had a tearoom surgery appointment with transport minister Rachel Maclean.
  • Was interviewed by BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 4 about body image.
  • Asked the Church Commissioner about the role played by the Church of England in supporting vulnerable people during Covid: https://www.drlukeevans.org.uk/news/church-commissioners-questions
  • Visited Northfield Wealth Management in Burbage to see how their business has been affected by the pandemic.
  • Had my periodic virtual meetings with the Chief Executive of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and the Chair of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership.
