Many drivers will have read about the changes to car tax for electric vehicles (3p per mile) and hybrids (1.5p per mile).
I've asked for a debate on this, as there are so many unanswered questions, such as:
- How is the mileage calculated if you travel abroad?
- What does it mean for people who live in Northern Ireland, but drive in to Ireland?
- How does it work if you have a new car, and don't need an MOT? Will drivers have to take their cars to a garage for the mileage to be calculated?
- What impact will this have on the second-hand car market?
Furthermore, drivers of petrol and diesel cars may have seen that the fuel duty freeze is to be temporarily extended to September 2026, with the cut being reversed in three stages: 1p on 1 September 2026, 2p on 1 December 2026 and 2p on 1 March 2027.
I have written to the Treasury with questions on the impact this will have on motorists.
